Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration/Anniversary
Today we give honor and recognition to one of the great leaders of this nation, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was a Baptist minister who headed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the early 1960's. He led protest demonstrations in opposition to segregation laws and practice in the South. The South suffered racial turmoil. Many black protesters were arrested, but the marches continued. Violence erupted when Dr. King's home was bombed. Four little black girls were killed in a separte bombing incident. The nation was shocked by this senseless violence. Many whites around the country were angered by the sight of peaceful black demonstrators being clubbed by white policemen, water-hosed by white firemen and bitten by police dogs. Sympathy for Dr King's cause gained momentum. The sympathy was often expressed in letters to congressmen urging support for a civil rights law that would end segregation.
